Telangana Homestay Scheme to Let Homeowners Earn From Tourists Across the State
Hyderabad | August 11, 2026: Homeowners in Telangana could soon turn spare rooms and residential properties into a source of tourism income, with the state government preparing to launch a dedicated homestay scheme.
The initiative will allow eligible families to register their homes as tourist accommodation and become part of Telangana's growing tourism economy. Instead of concentrating visitors around hotels and major cities, the government wants tourists to experience the state's local food, traditions, handicrafts, festivals and rural and tribal communities.
For homeowners, the scheme could create a new income opportunity without requiring them to develop a commercial hotel or large-scale hospitality project.
Who can register a home as a homestay?
The proposed scheme will cover residential properties that owners voluntarily offer for short-term tourist accommodation.
Eligible properties can include:
- Independent houses
- Heritage homes
- Traditional dwellings
- Rural and tribal houses
- Residential apartments
However, commercial accommodation such as hotels, resorts, lodges, hostels, paying-guest facilities, dormitories and serviced apartments will not qualify under the homestay category.
How will the Telangana homestay registration work?
The tourism department is expected to invite applications from eligible homeowners across Telangana.
Officials said applications will be processed within 30 working days, while registration will remain valid for two years.
The government plans to follow an ease-of-doing-business approach, with its primary role being to facilitate registration and promote approved homestays rather than operate them directly.

The final recommendations will be approved by the tourism department.
Once classified, homeowners will receive a classification certificate, while eligible properties will also be digitally listed on Telangana Tourism's promotional platforms.
This could give registered homeowners greater visibility among tourists searching for local accommodation.
Why Telangana is pushing the homestay model
The initiative is part of the state's broader Telangana Tourism Policy 2025-30, which aims to expand tourism beyond established urban destinations.
The state policy targets around ₹15,000 crore in tourism investment and three lakh jobs over five years.
Homestays are expected to support this goal by distributing tourism activity across urban, rural and tribal areas rather than concentrating it mainly around large hotels and established tourist centres.
