Goa Residents Oppose Nearly 200 Flat Housing Project in Canacona

CANACONA, August 31, 2026: More than 150 residents of Delem and Mastimol have opposed a proposed housing project comprising nearly 200 residential flats, raising concerns over approvals, road access and pressure on local infrastructure.

Residents Question Project Approvals

Residents said they had submitted written objections to the Canacona Municipal Council in 2023, but the project later received a construction licence and technical approval.

They have alleged that their concerns were not properly examined before the approvals were granted.

Road Width Raises Concern

One of the key objections relates to the project's approach road. Residents claim an RTI response from the PWD stated that the road has a maximum width of 4.2 metres, while the Town and Country Planning approval reportedly mentions a 10-metre-wide road.

Locals fear the project could put additional pressure on existing roads, water supply and electricity infrastructure.

 

Villagers Threaten Legal Action

Residents also claimed they were told that the flats would be sold only to locals/Goans and operated as serviced apartments rather than permanent residences.

Villagers have said they will continue opposing the project and are prepared to approach the courts if necessary.
