Bihar Homes Can Now Cut Power Bills With Rooftop Solar as Tata Power Targets 5 Lakh Households

Patna, August 22, 2026: Bihar’s rooftop solar market is set for a major push as Tata Power Renewable Energy has launched its Har Ghar Solar initiative, targeting solar installations across 5 lakh homes over the next three years.
The initiative is being supported by the Bihar government and the Centre’s PM Surya Ghar Yojana, with the state recently approving an additional ₹10,000 per kW subsidy for eligible households.
Bihar Homeowners Can Get Up to ₹98,000 Subsidy
With the central and state subsidies combined, eligible households in Bihar can receive:
- 1 kW system: ₹40,000 subsidy
- 2 kW system: ₹80,000 subsidy
- 3 kW and above: ₹98,000 subsidy
This could significantly reduce the upfront cost of installing rooftop solar for homeowners.
Bihar Has 32 GW Rooftop Solar Potential
Tata Power estimates that Bihar has around 32 GW of rooftop solar potential, while the peak electricity demand across residential, commercial and industrial consumers is about 9 GW.
The company said greater adoption could help households reduce dependence on conventional electricity and improve energy security, particularly in areas where power supply interruptions remain a concern.
Solar Plus Battery Storage Also Introduced
Along with rooftop solar installations, Tata Power has launched its Mysine battery storage system in Bihar.
The system is designed to store excess solar generation and provide backup during electricity interruptions, potentially reducing dependence on diesel generators for consumers who need reliable backup power.
Village-Level Solar Push Planned
Under the Mera Gaon, Mera Solar programme, Tata Power plans to support solar installations for every 100 households in selected villages through CSR funding.
Why This Matters for Bihar Homeowners
For homeowners, the combination of rooftop solar, government subsidies and battery storage could make solar power more affordable while helping reduce long-term electricity expenses.
The initiative also creates an opportunity for homeowners with suitable rooftops to turn unused roof space into an energy-generating asset.
