Bihar Approves 11.18 Lakh New Houses Under PM Awas Yojana for 2026-27

Patna, August 20, 2026: Thousands of families living in kutcha and unsafe houses in Bihar could benefit from a major housing push under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The state has received approval for a target of 11,18,937 new pucca houses for 2026-27.
The announcement comes as the government continues to expand housing support for economically weaker families across rural Bihar.
2.35 Lakh Families Recently Entered New Homes
At an event held at Bapu Sabhagar in Patna, the griha pravesh of around 2.35 lakh houses was organised, allowing beneficiaries to begin living in their newly constructed homes.
According to the government, around 19 lakh people received pucca houses in Bihar over the past two years. The latest target is expected to extend housing support to more eligible families.
More Eligible Families Could Benefit
The government has also highlighted changes in eligibility rules aimed at bringing more needy households within the scheme's coverage.
During surveys, families found living in kutcha houses will be identified for housing assistance. The Centre and Bihar government will work together on implementation.
Focus on Safe Housing for Rural Families
The latest housing target is significant for families that continue to live in vulnerable or inadequate housing conditions. Besides providing a permanent house, the government is also linking rural development with better infrastructure, roads, employment opportunities and women's economic empowerment.
Why This Matters
For eligible families in Bihar, the approval of more than 11 lakh new houses could provide a major opportunity to move from kutcha housing to a permanent pucca home. The next key step will be beneficiary identification, verification and implementation of the approved housing target.
