Nagpur Property Tax Defaulters Lose Amnesty Option as NMC Moves Toward Seizures

Nagpur, Maharashtra | September 11, 2026: Property owners in Nagpur with long-pending tax dues are facing tougher enforcement after the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) rejected a proposal for a property tax amnesty scheme.
The decision comes as the civic body intensifies recovery of around ₹1,279 crore in outstanding property tax, including penalties and warrant-related dues.
No Penalty Waiver for Defaulters
The demand for an Abhay-style amnesty scheme was raised in the NMC standing committee, with supporters arguing that similar relief had helped residents clear dues in previous years.
The proposal was rejected on the grounds that offering concessions to defaulters would be unfair to property owners who have regularly paid their taxes.
NMC Steps Up Recovery Action
The special recovery campaign is running from August 20 to September 30, with the civic body combining collection efforts with stronger enforcement.
NMC has already started seizure proceedings against major defaulters and has warned that continued non-payment could also lead to action involving water and sewer connections.
Eight Properties Face Action Over ₹8.81 Crore
The enforcement drive has already reached properties in the Kachipura-Ramdaspeth area, where eight properties face seizure and recovery proceedings over combined property tax dues of about ₹8.81 crore.
NMC has also prepared a list of 100 major defaulters as it pushes to recover a substantial portion of the outstanding amount.
What Property Owners Should Do
For homeowners, landlords and commercial property owners with unpaid municipal taxes, the latest move means waiting for a broad penalty waiver may no longer be a safe strategy.
Property tax dues can accumulate through penalties and other charges, while enforcement action can create additional complications for owners looking to sell, transfer or otherwise transact in the property.
With NMC continuing its recovery campaign, owners with outstanding dues should verify their tax records and resolve pending liabilities before enforcement action reaches their property.
