Mysuru Property Owners Face Action as Civic Body Tightens Tax Recovery

Mysuru, Karnataka | September 8, 2026: Property owners in Mysuru with long-pending tax dues could face legal action and even attachment of their properties as the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has ordered a city-wide recovery drive. Officials have been directed to complete the required notice process for tax defaulters by the end of September.
Why Property Owners Need to Act Now
MCC has reviewed property tax arrears ward by ward and instructed officials to initiate action against properties where dues have remained unpaid for a prolonged period. Owners with outstanding taxes should therefore clear their dues rather than wait for enforcement proceedings.
The move is particularly important for owners planning to sell, transfer or otherwise transact in their property, as unresolved municipal dues can create complications during property-related transactions.
Three Notices Will Be Issued to Defaulters
Under the prescribed recovery process, defaulters will receive the required sequence of notices before stronger action is taken. MCC has asked zonal officials to complete the notice-issuance process across pending cases by September 30.
Owners who receive a notice should verify the outstanding amount and clear legitimate dues within the stipulated period.
Property Attachment Could Follow Non-Payment
If dues remain unpaid even after the prescribed notices, the civic body can proceed with further recovery measures, including attachment of immovable property, subject to the applicable legal process. Karnataka's 2025 municipal taxation rules provide mechanisms for attachment and recovery of property and other assets in cases of continued default.
This makes prolonged property-tax default a direct financial and legal risk for homeowners.
Good News for Property Buyers and Responsible Owners
The recovery drive could have a positive impact on compliant property owners and buyers if it improves municipal finances.
Property tax is an important source of revenue for urban local bodies, and stronger collections can support roads, drainage, sanitation, street lighting and other civic infrastructure. Karnataka's municipal administration has also been pushing urban local bodies to strengthen revenue collection to fund development works.
Better civic infrastructure can ultimately support the liveability and long-term attractiveness of residential and commercial properties.
Tax-Exempt Institutions Also Under Review
MCC has also directed officials to ensure collection of mandatory service charges from institutions that are exempt from property tax. The civic body is reviewing such institutions separately as part of its broader revenue-collection exercise.
This indicates that the drive is not limited only to individual homeowners but is also focused on improving municipal revenue across different property categories.
What This Means for Mysuru Property Values
The immediate impact will be strongest on tax-defaulters, but the wider property market could benefit if improved municipal collections translate into better public services.
For investors, stronger civic finances can be a positive factor when assessing neighbourhoods for long-term property investment. However, buyers should also check property tax payment records and outstanding municipal dues during due diligence before completing a transaction.
What Property Owners Should Do
Owners with pending dues should check their property-tax status and clear outstanding amounts as early as possible. MCC already provides an online facility where property owners can view tax details and make payments.
For buyers, verifying that property taxes are fully paid should become part of the standard document-checking process before purchasing a Mysuru property.
