Delhi Civic Body Demolishes 82 Properties, Seals 43 in June 2026 After Deadly Fire & Building Collapse

NEW DELHI, June 6: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has intensified its crackdown on unauthorised construction following two devastating incidents last week. Since June 1, the civic body has demolished 82 properties and sealed 43 properties across the city.
On Wednesday, 21 people lost their lives in a fire at a Hauz Rani bed and breakfast guesthouse. Just days earlier, on May 30, six people died when a multi-storey building collapsed in south Delhi's Saidulajab area. Both properties were reportedly operating with significant building bye-law violations.
Action Under Government Orders
Officials said the crackdown on unauthorised construction is happening following directions from Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The MCD is conducting these drives with teams assisted by Delhi Police and bulldozers to remove illegal structures.
B&B Guesthouses Sealed in Hauz Rani
After the B&B blaze, MCD identified 12 bed and breakfast guesthouses operating in violation of building bye-laws in the same area during a joint survey.
On Friday, five B&B guesthouses were sealed, including Green Residency, Venue Inn, Sky Inn, and Mi Cassa Inn. Thereafter, one property was demolished and sealed in Khirki Extension. Eight other properties in Saidulajab were also demolished and sealed. More sealing drives are being planned against properties in both areas.
Zone-Wise Demolition Action
MCD conducted demolition action against 12 properties for violating building bylaws in the south zone, seven properties in the Civil Lines zone, and eight properties in the Narela zone since June 1.
In Savitri Nagar, Sainik Farm, and Khanpur, demolition and sealing action was undertaken against three properties. Additionally, three basements were sealed for running libraries in Gautam Nagar without proper approvals.
Areas Under Constant Vigil
To ensure the issue is monitored, the affected areas are under constant vigil to identify any unauthorised construction and B&B guesthouses flouting regulations.
"The perpetuity of any illegal construction or such activity is certainly going to be punished sternly by the MCD. In the days to follow, the demolition and sealing action would become stronger with stringent measures," an official said.
150+ Notices Issued
MCD also claimed that it had issued more than 150 notices on unauthorised construction, sealing, and demolition against properties for misuse of premises.
Warning to Public
The civic body has issued a warning to the general public.
"The general public is also advised in their own interest not to indulge in such unauthorised construction or illegal activities, which are against the provisions of DMC Act-1957, Master Plan-2021 and Unified Building Bye-Laws-2016, keeping in view the repercussion of such acts i.e. demolition and sealing action by the MCD," the civic body said.
What's Next
The MCD has made it clear that the demolition and sealing drive will only get stronger in the coming days. Properties found violating building norms, especially B&B guesthouses and commercial establishments in residential areas, will face strict action.
For property owners and builders, the message is clear – unauthorised construction and building bye-law violations will no longer be tolerated, and the consequences will be immediate and severe.
