Punjab Builds 17,000 PMAY-G Homes, Nearly 20,000 More Under Construction
Chandigarh, August 27, 2026: Punjab has completed construction of 17,000 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), with financial assistance of ₹478.45 crore released to beneficiaries. The state has received sanction for a total of 36,792 houses since 2024-25, while construction of the remaining 19,792 homes is currently underway.
17,000 families already have pucca homes
Punjab Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond said the completed houses are aimed at economically weaker rural families and households living in kaccha or unsafe homes.
The government has described the housing programme as more than just construction of houses, with the focus being on providing beneficiaries with safer and more dignified living conditions.
For rural families that have struggled with inadequate housing, the completion of these homes can mean better safety, sanitation and long-term housing security.
19,792 houses currently being built
Of the 36,792 houses sanctioned under PMAY-G since the 2024-25 financial year, 19,792 are still under construction across Punjab.
The state government has not provided a district-wise breakup or a specific completion deadline for these remaining houses. However, officials said construction is progressing across the state.
PMAY-G provides eligible rural households with financial support to construct pucca houses with basic amenities, including provisions for a kitchen and toilet.
Separate ₹360 crore support for flood-hit homes
Alongside PMAY-G, Punjab has also received a separate ₹360 crore housing assistance package for families whose homes were damaged during recent floods.
Around 30,000 flood-affected houses have been identified for reconstruction or repair under the programme. Of these, 28,020 houses have already received sanctions.
Financial assistance is being released directly to eligible beneficiaries in instalments, with the first and second instalments currently being transferred to their bank accounts.
Punjab’s rural housing push
PMAY-G has been the Centre’s key rural housing programme since its launch in 2016. Nationally, the scheme now targets 4.95 crore rural houses by March 2029.
Punjab’s implementation had earlier lagged behind several larger states, but the latest figures indicate that construction activity has gained momentum since 2024-25.
