Mumbai Property Registrations Hit 14-Year High in September

Mumbai October 1, 2026: Mumbai recorded 12,622 property registrations in September 2026, up 5% year on year and the highest September tally in over 14 years, based on Maharashtra Department of Registration and Stamps data analysed by Knight Frank India (published September 30).

Key numbers

  • Registrations: 12,622 (August 2026: 12,580, so roughly flat month on month)

  • Stamp duty collected: Rs 1,227 crore, down 5% from Rs 1,292 crore in September 2025, but up 8% from Rs 1,131 crore in August

  • Ganesh Chaturthi window (Sept 14-25): 5,379 registrations, up 22% year on year and the best festive-period result in four years (4,392 in 2025, 3,405 in 2024, 3,782 in 2023)

  • Festive stamp duty: Rs 640 crore, up 32%, more than half the month's total

Rising volumes, softer revenue

Knight Frank attributed the fall in stamp duty to a shift in transaction mix, meaning relatively more lower- and mid-value deals. Chairman and MD Shishir Baijal said the festive performance made a notable contribution to the month.

Year-to-date context

In H1 2026, Mumbai logged 80,221 registrations (up 6% year on year), its strongest first half since 2013, with stamp duty of Rs 6,968 crore.
