Belagavi IT Park Gets New Site in Kanabargi With Fresh Push for Development
Belagavi, Karnataka | September 1, 2026: Belagavi's long-pending IT Park project has received a fresh push, with Kanabargi now emerging as the proposed location for the development. The move could give the city another opportunity to attract technology companies, create jobs and strengthen its commercial real estate market.
The project has remained stuck at the planning stage for more than 15 years, with earlier proposals at Turkmatti and Desur failing to progress because of land, environmental and infrastructure challenges.
Why Kanabargi Is Being Considered
The latest proposal identifies Kanabargi as a potential site for the IT Park because of its proximity to the city, better connectivity and scope for future urban expansion.
Officials have been asked to identify suitable land in the area following discussions involving the Belagavi Urban Development Authority (BUDA).
For the project to move beyond the planning stage, however, land identification will need to be followed by acquisition, infrastructure development and investor outreach.
Earlier IT Park Plans Failed to Take Off
Belagavi's IT Park proposal dates back to 2008–09, when around 750 acres of defence-owned land at Turkmatti along the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway was considered.
The proposal faced several hurdles, including land transfer procedures and environmental clearances. Environmental groups also raised concerns about the area's ecological importance and wildlife habitat.
Authorities later shifted focus to Desur, where around 42 acres was acquired for the project.
However, poor road connectivity, limited water and power infrastructure and relatively high land costs made the location less attractive to potential investors.
What a Successful IT Park Could Mean for Belagavi
A functioning IT Park could have an impact well beyond the technology sector.
The project could attract companies from areas such as:
