Trichy Corporation Targets Top 100 Property Tax Defaulters Owing ₹9.4 Crore

TRICHY, August 31, 2026: The Trichy Corporation has started action against its top 100 property tax defaulters, who collectively owe around ₹9.4 crore to the civic body. The move comes as the corporation faces a fund crunch affecting city maintenance and new development proposals.

Top Defaulters Account for 25% of Arrears

The corporation's annual property tax demand is around ₹154 crore, collected from nearly 2.4 lakh residential and commercial properties.

For 2026-27, outstanding property tax is estimated at ₹43 crore. The top 100 defaulters alone account for roughly 25% of these arrears, making them a major focus of the recovery drive.

Schools, Offices and Commercial Properties Among Defaulters

The list includes schools, colleges, government offices, apartments, cinemas, hotels, hospitals and religious properties.

The minimum outstanding amount among the top 100 defaulters is around ₹2.6 lakh, while one property on Fort Station Road reportedly has dues of approximately ₹56.9 lakh.

Water and Drainage Connections Could Be Suspended

The corporation has issued notices asking defaulters to clear their outstanding dues. Officials have warned that continued non-payment could lead to the suspension of drinking water and underground drainage connections.

Some properties have also faced penalties linked to unauthorised construction, with officials seeking explanations regarding the calculation of taxes and penalties.

Why It Matters for Property Owners

Property tax arrears can lead to additional penalties and enforcement action. The Trichy drive also highlights how unpaid municipal dues can affect property owners' access to civic services and create complications when dealing with property-related transactions.
