Cabinet Approves ₹2,169 Crore Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A Extension

New Delhi, June 10, 2026: The Union Cabinet has approved Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail project, paving the way for a major expansion of the city's public transport network. The new phase will add over 6 km to the existing metro corridor and improve connectivity between key residential, commercial and airport zones.

The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Metro Network to Expand Further

Phase 2A includes a 6.032-km extension that will be integrated with the existing Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro corridor. Once completed, the metro network will expand to nearly 78 km, strengthening urban mobility across the region.

Officials said the project is designed to improve travel convenience while supporting the city's growing transportation needs.

Five New Stations Planned

The approved corridor will include four elevated stations and one underground station.

The proposed stations are Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar and Airport. The airport connection is expected to significantly improve accessibility for both residents and visitors.

The project has been approved at an estimated cost of ₹2,169.04 crore, including construction-related expenses.

Boost for Connectivity and Development

Government officials believe the metro extension will enhance connectivity between important residential and commercial hubs while reducing travel time across the city.

The project is also expected to support economic activity, tourism and future urban development in surrounding areas.

Infrastructure improvements around the corridor could further strengthen Ahmedabad's position as one of India's fastest-growing metropolitan cities.

Employment Generation Expected

The construction phase is expected to create employment opportunities for around 2,000 people during peak activity.

Once operational, the metro system is likely to support around 500 jobs related to operations and maintenance.

Officials say the project will contribute to both infrastructure growth and local employment generation.

Final Word

The approval of Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A marks another significant step in the city's transport infrastructure development. With improved airport connectivity, new stations and expanded metro coverage, the project is expected to enhance urban mobility while supporting long-term economic growth in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.
