Delhi Race Course Land Update 53 Acres Near PM Residence Handed Over to CPWD

New Delhi, August 27, 2026: The Centre has taken possession of 53.242 acres of prime land in the Race Course area near the Prime Minister’s residence and handed it over to the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) for maintenance. The move follows a recent court order rejecting the Delhi Race Club’s plea for a stay on the eviction proceedings.

Why the 53-Acre Land Matters

The property is located in one of Delhi’s most prominent and high-value areas. The land was formally handed over by the Land and Development Office to CPWD’s E-Division for its upkeep and maintenance.

The handover was carried out after the Patiala House Court on August 25 refused to stay the Estate Officer’s eviction order.

Delhi Race Club Loses Stay Plea

The court observed that the Delhi Race Club had been given several opportunities to submit its response and evidence but failed to do so. The court therefore found no sufficient grounds for granting an interim stay.

 

Lease Had Not Been Renewed Since 1994

The dispute centres on the lease of the property. According to the court record, the Delhi Race Club’s lease had not been renewed through any document after 1994.

An eviction notice was issued on March 12, 2026, directing the club to vacate the premises and hand over peaceful possession to the Land and Development Office.

The land has now been placed under CPWD’s care, although the broader legal dispute is not over yet. The main case is scheduled for hearing on September 26, 2026.
